e-newsletter

A warm welcome to our Autumn 2010 newsletter.
We have seen a large number of new and returning patients since our last update and are always pleased to welcome friends and colleagues whom you might want to recommend to the practice.
We are delighted to welcome dentist Katharine Cordner and nurse Zoe to
the team.
Katharine graduated from University Wales College of Medicine in 2002 and spent five years in the Navy including service aboard ships in the Arabian Gulf, Caribbean and The Seychelles before leaving to work in a general practice in Devon for two years.
She has been awarded Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners in London and also completed a three year Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies from the University Wales College of Medicine. She is interested in all aspects of dentistry and her calm and understanding manner enable her to put more nervous patients at ease. She is also presently pursuing an interest in cosmetic dentistry having recently attended the World Aesthetic Congress.
Katharine has three young children who keep her very busy outside of work but when she does have time, she enjoys running, tennis, skiing and gardening.
Zoe was placed with us whilst completing her training at Warwick College, and proved so effective and bubbly that we snapped her up before she even qualified.
We are pleased to say that Martyn has made a complete recovery after a serious illness at the beginning of 2010. Martyn and Peter both continue to work with us at the practice they founded nearly 38 years ago. They now each work three days a week and have full patient lists but continue to take referrals from colleagues and to see friends and family of existing patients.

Family dental care
We are currently developing a preventive care programme with the guidance of
our dental therapist Donna George to
help children have great teeth and
healthy mouths.
We intend to arrange children's fun
days in the school holidays dedicated
to giving preventive care such as diet advice, fluoride applications and brushing instruction. We would welcome your views on how this might best be organised to
suit your family, please email us or let
your dental care team know what you
think when next you visit us.
Donna is specially trained in all aspects of preventive care, including dietary advice and dental hygiene therapy for adults and children. She can apply topical fluoride treatments to vulnerable teeth and place fissure sealants and fillings to protect permanent and primary teeth and also
take impressions for sports mouth guards. She can carry out treatment to deal with infected baby teeth and remove them if
this becomes necessary.
Donna's calm and friendly manner and great sense of humour has already made her very popular and she is happy to take time to build trust and confidence with the children we send to see her.

Projects
As part of our commitment to continued improvement of the practice facilities, we have ordered a digital replacement for the large X-ray machine that we use for checking the whole jaw including wisdom teeth and suitability for dental implants. This will reduce the X-ray dose and give us instant results, similar to the small X-ray system that we switched over to digital some 8 years ago.
We are currently updating our two sterilising suites to comply with future requirements well ahead of time and to offer the very best cross-infection protection for our patients and staff.
We hope that patients are enjoying the benefits of our upgraded upstairs and downstairs cloakrooms.
John has arranged several exhibitions by local artists in the waiting areas, watch this wall space. We will welcome your feedback on the work on display. More information will be available on the website shortly.

Goodbyes
We were sad to say goodbye to Jane Weaver at the beginning of the year. Jane has decided to stop working in dentistry to spend more time with her young son. We thank her for her contribution over her twenty loyal years with the practice and wish her well.
Our thanks go to dentist Andrew McDonnell, who helped us briefly while Martyn was unwell but has returned to the south-east.
Laura, who rejoined our reception team after graduating in Microbiology last year, has found a job at the Horton and JR Hospitals pathology department, and we wish her well in her chosen career and will miss her.

News from Amsel&Wilkins
Nigel has been to The HQ of Ivoclar Vivodent in Lichtenstein to learn about BPS dentures, a predictable technique to achieve natural looking and excellent fitting complete dentures. This identifies the ideal positioning of teeth and can also help when planning implant cases. A number of satisfied patients are already enjoying the benefits of improved confidence and quality of life that a stable and secure denture offers without the need for fixative.
Martyn has recently been to Belgium for an update course on implant and general dentistry. John attended a world symposium on implant complications which stressed the importance of seeing a hygienist regularly to maintain excellent gum health around existing teeth and dental implants. It also highlighted increasing evidence linking poor gum health to heart disease and diabetes.
