Preventive Dentistry

Childrens teeth are more vulnerable to decay than adult teeth, due to their thin enamel, so it is really important to keep up regular check ups to allow small cavities to be detected early when they can be treated. Where decay has been a problem, we might take X-rays with our low dose digital system at appropriate intervals to monitor the situation more closely.

Donna, our specially trained dental therapist can apply Flouride to help strengthen weakened teeth, and provide dietary counselling to help identify risk factors that might be causing a decay problem. She can also give helpful advice to children about caring for their own teeth in a way they find fun and interesting. Another important aspect of Donna's role is to provide fillings where necessary.

Adult cheek teeth start appearing when children are about age 6 years old. We can seal the grooves in their biting surfaces that are a common site for developing decay without any damage to the teeth. These sealants often last into teenage years when children are more able to effectively keep their teeth clean. As baby teeth are replaced by adult teeth these can also benefit from sealants.

Trauma

Many children accidently bash their teeth from time to time, and we will always try to see a child as soon as reasonably possible if you are worried and want reassurance or advice.

When a child has an injury to an adult front tooth, this should always be checked, often with an X-ray. It is often possible to repair chipped front teeth in a single visit , and if you can find and keep the chipped fragment this can sometimes be cleaned and glued back directly.

We can provide custom fitted sports mouthguards to avoid injury during contact sports and recommend these over off the shelf versions.
