jaw joint problems

Clicking joints while eating or opening the mouth is a very common occurrence.

The clicking is due to displacement of the disc which sits on the head of the joint. As you open, (clicking - it pops on as you open, and off as you close). Though irritating, this is not a major problem and generally does not require any treatment.

In some cases the joint and surrounding muscles can become very painful or restricted opening can occur, making eating very difficult. Sometimes the problem is due to degenerative changes such as arthritis and will require specialist care. After a thorough examination your dentist will be able to offer appropriate treatment options. This may consist of jaw exercises, use of anti-inflammatory medications or the construction of a custom made appliance such as the Tanner appliance.
