Many adult patients dream of having straighter teeth and are embarrassed about their smile, but wrongly believe there are not many options to improve it. An attractive and healthy smile has a huge effect on our self-confidence and crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth can make us feel bad about our smile.

However, mention orthodontics and many people think that the only option available is traditional, train-track style metal bracket and wire braces. The thought of wearing very obvious braces for a significant amount of time (often two years or more) puts people off seeking orthodontic treatment. Modern orthodontics have advanced greatly and there are now a number of discreet treatments available. One of the most popular is Invisalign invisible aligners.

Invisalign is a highly discreet way of realigning teeth, from making mild cosmetic improvements to treating more complex cases. This treatment uses a series of bespoke clear aligners to gently move your teeth into a more desirable position, closing gaps, straightening and realigning them as required. Invisalign has been around since 1999 and is now in its fifth generation, allowing a wider range of problems to be treated.

At Amsel & Wilkins Piers Neville became an accredited Platinum Invisalign Comprehensive Provider since 2004, meaning he has treated hundreds of cases and is able to carry out a wide range of treatments including complex cases.

More recently, Nigel Braine-Hartnell became accredited to use the Invisalign Go system that allows correction of more simple crowding cases, especially where front teeth have become buckled and twisted with time or after earlier orthodontics has relapsed. Most Invisalign Go cases are completed in 6-12 months.

Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners to gently move your teeth into a better position. They are bespoke to fit your teeth and because they are clear, nobody need know you are having orthodontic treatment. Unlike conventional braces the aligners are also removable, meaning you can take them out for short periods to clean, to brush your teeth and to eat and drink.

With our new iTero Element scanner you don't even need to have an impression taken, your teeth are scanned in just over 1 minute and you can see the projected final result for your smile. The system uses digital technology to plan attachments on the teeth to optimise the treatment. You should wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day, and on average will need to move on to the next aligner weekly for a faster treatment time.

Piers has treated patients with a number of clear aligner systems, achieving greatest success with Invisalign.

Invisalign is now a popular form of orthodontic treatment for all ages from teenagers onwards.

More than 6 million patients across the world have been successfully treated with Invisalign. If you are interested in improving your smile, contact the practice today.
